Advanced - Exceeding Allocation

What happens if you exceed bandwidth or webspace?

The Advanced Plans are set with a hard ceiling for webspace and bandwidth usage. This means you can not exceed your allocation of either. So that your account does not exceed allocation, we send out automated reminders that alert you to the position.


80% Bandwidth Reminder

If you use up 80% of your bandwidth allocation, the system will automatically send an email to the address registered in the Control Panel (not the Billing Centre).

This email will say something like ...

"The domain 'change-domain.com' has reached 80% of its bandwidth limit."

If you receive this email warning, we recommend you take the following action ...

1 - check if you are 80% through the month

Do a quick calculation to see whether you are more than 80% the way through the month. If you are less than 80% the way through the month then consider upgrading your plan to the next level. If you are more than 80% the way through the month then you 'may not' need to take any action because your bandwidth usage will be reset to zero at the beginning of the next month.

2 - check if there has been unusual activity

In most cases, your website will show a natural increase in bandwidth usage as your site becomes more popular. It is therefore likely that the bandwidth reminder is due to this reason. However, you should check your bandwidth usage stats to see if there has been a sudden or unusual increase in bandwidth usage.

To do this ...

Login to the Control Panel and click on the icon to 'web/ftp stats'. Then click on the link to 'bandwidth'. The next page shows you an overview of your bandwidth usage. If you then click on the link to view each month in turn, you can get a closer look at how your bandwidth has been used.

You should look for any unusual increases to bandwidth usage that you are unable to explain. If you need help interpreting your bandwidth usage then please let us know.


100% Bandwidth Reminder

If you reach 100% of your monthly bandwidth allocation then you will receive an email to let you know. At this stage your website will be unavailable and your email will cease to function correctly.

If this happens, you need to either upgrade your plan to the next level, or wait until the end of the month when the bandwidth usage stats are reset to zero.


Webspace Notification

Much the same as the bandwidth reminder, you will receive a warning mail if you reach 80% and 100% of your web space allocation.

Web space is not reset at the end of each month so if you receive these warning messages you will need to either ...

- upgrade your plan to the next level
- remove files from the server to create more space

1 - check overall disk usage

On the main page of your Control Panel, in the left hand column, you can find a summary of 'disk space used' and 'disk space free'.

If you want a clearer view at how this disk space is being used, click the icon to 'disk space usage' and this will show you a breakdown of how the disk space is being used. If you then click the option 'show top level' this will give a summary of usage that is a little easier to understand.

2 - check email disk usage

You can easily check the amount of disk space your email accounts are using by doing the following ...

- click the icon to 'mail'
- click the text link to 'add/edit/remove/manage accounts'
- click the text option to 'show disk space used'

If your email accounts show a large amount of disk space usage, you can clear this in one of two ways: either set your local computer to 'not store a copy of email on the server' or login to webmail and clear out the old messages manually.
